Letter from Senator Charles Schumer

United States Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer had to miss the DRC this year; he’s a busy man these days! But he wanted to make sure DRC members heard from him, so we’re pleased to post this letter from our friend, Chuck Schumer.

Dear Friends,

Senator Charles SchumerI am sorry that I cannot be in Syracuse with you tonight, but I hope you will agree that I must devote this time working to win back the Senate for our Democratic Party. These first few months have confirmed that we must have a robust Democratic Senate that can be an effective check on this White House.

Like all of you, the election was a genuine shock to me. And I spent the days after really down in the dumps. My grown daughters were near tears. And I taught them the old Shirelles song “Mama said there’ll be days like this.” But after a day or two, it hit me: Certainly it would have been more fun for me to be the Majority Leader of the Senate, and Hillary Clinton as President. We would have been able to do great things for the middle class and those struggling to get there. And that’s why I got into politics in the first place. But, in truth, now my job is even more important. Now we must defend the rights of those same people. And I am up for the fight!

At the same time, I have not…and never will…forget New York. I have already seen a number of you as I travel the state and will see more of you soon. I have already visited 32 counties so far this year, and will once again visit all 62 this year, as I have every year since I became Senator. Whether it’s working with Senator Gillibrand on Canadian milk trade policy, or continuing to fight for safer procedures for the oil trains that traverse our state, or fighting for Essential Air Service for our North Country airports, or working to curb the flow of fentanyl which has made the opioid crisis even more deadly, I am continuing to fight for the interests of Upstate New York.

Finally, I want to thank you for helping me secure another great victory this fall. I truly stand on your shoulders and am forever in your debt.

Enjoy the dinner, and the weekend, and I hope to see you all soon.

Chuck Schumer
